How to install NeoForge in Minecraft
Install the NeoForge loader with its official installer, pick the profile in the launcher and add mods to the mods folder. Includes the most common errors and their fixes.
NeoForge is a mod loader for Minecraft Java Edition forked from Forge and maintained by the NeoForged project. Many large mods for modern versions, such as tech and magic mods, are released for NeoForge.
Before you start
- Open the official launcher at least once with the Minecraft version you will use.
- Close the launcher.
- The installer is a
.jarfile: you need a recent Java installed to run it. If double-clicking does nothing, install Java from Adoptium (Eclipse Temurin).
1. Download the installer
Go to the official site, neoforged.net, and use the installer download link. Pick the NeoForge version matching your Minecraft version: NeoForge version numbers carry the game version they belong to. Download the latest stable one for your game unless a mod asks for a specific one.
Download only from neoforged.net. Some sites imitate the name to push ads or malware.
2. Run the installer
- Open the downloaded
.jar. - Choose Install client.
- Check the install folder (the installer detects the official launcher's).
- Press Proceed and wait for the libraries to download.
When done, the launcher shows a profile named NeoForge with the installed version.
3. Add your mods
Copy the .jar files of NeoForge mods for your version into the mods folder:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\mods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
4. Launch the game
Select the NeoForge profile in the launcher and press Play. The main menu shows a Mods button listing what was loaded.
Common problems
- Forge mods on NeoForge. Although NeoForge comes from Forge, current mods are not interchangeable. Use files released for NeoForge.
- The game closes with a version error. A mod is for another Minecraft version. Compare the version on its page with your profile.
- Missing libraries. NeoForge names the mod and the missing library. Many mods use libraries such as GeckoLib, Architectury API or Cloth Config; download them for NeoForge and your version.
- Two NeoForge profiles. If you install several versions, each creates its own profile. Pick the one matching your mods.
