How to install texture packs in Minecraft
Resource packs change the look of the game with no mods or loaders. Learn where the file goes, how to enable it from the menu and how to drag it straight into the game.
Texture packs, officially called resource packs, change the look of blocks, items, creatures, the interface and sounds. They need no mod loader: they work in regular Minecraft Java Edition.
1. Download the pack
A resource pack is a .zip file. Download it for a game version equal or close to yours: each pack declares inside (the pack.mcmeta file) which resource format it targets, and the game warns if it is from a different version, though it usually works anyway.
2. Install it (quick way)
Open Minecraft, go to Options, Resource Packs and drag the .zip file from your file explorer onto the game window. The game copies it into the right folder for you.
2. Install it (manual way)
Copy the .zip, without extracting, into the resourcepacks folder:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\resourcepacks - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/resourcepacks - Linux:
~/.minecraft/resourcepacks
In Options, Resource Packs there is an Open Pack Folder button that takes you straight there.
3. Enable it
In Options, Resource Packs you see two columns: available on the left and selected on the right. Hover over the pack and press the arrow to move it right. Then press Done and the game reloads resources.
If you enable several packs, the one higher in the right column takes priority over those below.
Tips
- High-resolution packs (64x, 128x or more) use a lot of memory. If the game slows down, try a 16x or 32x one.
- Some packs need a companion mod for advanced features such as custom creature models or connected textures. In those cases the pack page says which mod is needed (for example Entity Model Features or Continuity on Fabric).
- To remove a pack, move it back to the left column or delete the file from the folder.
